Halloween Craft Tutorial

If you are looking for an easy and inexpensive way to decorate for Halloween, I recommend pipe-cleaner spiders. I made these a couple of years ago, and we love to display them around the house each October. This year, we decided we needed even more spiders, so the kids helped and I took some pictures to show you how to do it.

Here’s What You Will Need

  • Black Pipe Cleaners (2.99 for 100 at Michael’s). This will be enough for about 10 spiders. I recommend you get an extra bag of pipe cleaners.
  • Glitter Glue (2.99 at Michael’s)
  • Scissors

How to Make Pipe-Cleaner Spiders

  1. Cut one pipe cleaner into thirds and set it aside.
  2. Take 5 full-length pipe cleaner and twist them together at one end with one of the cut pieces.
  3. Hold the pipe cleaners and wrap them around your finger a few times to make them into a ball with a hole in the center.
  4. Once you have it wrapped into a circle, use the excess short piece to close the circle.
  5. Then you tuck all the extra pieces into the center and adjust your spider body so it looks like a nice round circle.
  6. Now, put 4 full-length pipe cleaners through the body to make eight legs.
  7. And bend the legs.
  8. Apply glitter glue eyes and allow to dry thoroughly.

And voila! You have adorable halloween decorations for your home for under $10!

Can you do this with kids?

It depends on their age. My daughter (7) did pretty well, but it is kind of tricky to manipulate the pipe cleaners. And doing this with my four-year-old gave us, well…that slightly stepped-on spider look. But he had fun doing it, and he wanted the spiders he made in his room anyway, so it worked out just fine! (That’s another reason to get that second bag of pipe-cleaners – you will have plenty for some trial and error).

Happy (almost) Halloween time!
