Money-Saving Tips from Frugalissa Finds

Are you frugal? I…well, I could stand to be more frugal. I should pay more attention to people like Melissa Cox from Frugalissa Finds. The following is a brief Q&A with the author of this fantastic blog dedicated to finding and sharing money-saving information.

What do you think is the number one way moms waste money when they could be saving it?

I think the number one waste of money is buying unnecessary items, clothes, and toys for kids when they really don’t need it. Also upgrading to a newer item when the one you have works just fine.

If you don’t have a ton of time to spend on coupons, what’s the easiest way to save money on groceries?

Make a weekly menu off what is on sale in the store ads. You can buy meats on “manager special” and they are marked down drastically when they are close to the sell by date, then freeze it to use later. I also freeze my leftovers to use later instead of tossing them out to make a meal stretch and save money.

Where do you find the best deals, and what coupon sites do you recommend?

I recommend you subscribe to your Sunday newspaper because you are guaranteed the coupon inserts. When you buy a paper at the store you may miss out on coupon inserts since those papers are made with leftover inserts and ads. Then I match the coupons up to what is on sale to maximize savings. There are also online coupons sites like Coupon.com, RedPlum.com and SmartSource.com.

I have to interject here and tell you that this girl spends only $40-50/week on groceries! Melissa was recently featured by our local ABC affiliate. My favorite line in here is her deadpan statement, “I am not a hoarder,” which totally makes me laugh because of the ways she says it. And it’s also funny because in the video you see her buying like 16 boxes of Raisin Bran. Actually, I have to give her props for paying it forward – she gave the extra groceries to a local charity. Attagirl!

What’s something you wish every mom knew?

Not to be in a hurry to move your children from a car seat to a booster. I had a horrible accident when my kids were 3 and 5 years old. My daughter was seriously injured and ended up being admitted to the hospital because of her head and facial injuries. The paramedics said the car seats saved their lives. If they had been in boosters I might have only one child alive today.

What is your number one money-saving tip for moms?

My number one saving tip is buy used when it comes to toys, clothes, etc. for the kids from consignment sales, garage sales and craigslist – it saves you a lot of money.
