Have you ever had greeting card sticker shock? I have, especially when buying them to go with birthday presents for little kids. So, here are some ways to save money on birthday cards.
1. Think inside the box! I picked up this box set of 30 birthday cards for $9.99 at Ross. That makes the cards a mere 30 cents each. Sweet!
2. Get them at the Dollar Store. The store near me sells cards 2/$1 which is a really good deal if you like the card. The only thing I don’t like about those is that the envelopes are usually bigger than the cards.
3. Hit the 99 cents card section at the grocery store.
4. Birthday certificates. I picked up this pack of birthday certificates in one of the dollar bins at Target. I think they are probably meant for teachers, but we used them for preschool friends. It works well when you have a child who is just starting to write because all they have to do is write is the friend’s name, the date and their own name. (It’s also good hand-writing practice).
5. Have the kids make home-made cards. They can do this on the computer, but I prefer a drawing and hand-written message. This is a real winner with the grandparents and it also is an affordable way to include a card with a child’s birthday gift.
They are definitely more special — they’re the ones my kids want to keep. And I love seeing what my daughter will draw or write to her friends. Of course this requires advance planning and sometimes I am wrapping the gift in the back of the car in the parking lot of the birthday location so when we are short on time – we think inside the box! At 30 cents a card – you just can’t beat it!
