A Birdie Made a Nest and Laid Eggs in Our Windowsill – I Took Pictures

We have lots of birds around here. We have seen nests and found eggs – usually broken and on the ground. We love little birdies and were were so excited to find a bird’s nest on the windowsill of our playroom. We have had a front row seat and have been so excited to watch it all happen…

A short while later, there were three and then four eggs.

The incubation period (per the Internet) is 10-12 days after the last egg is laid.
So, we waited. And watched.

Our sweet birdie, sitting on her eggs.
At first, she would fly away when we came by.
Eventually, she realized she could stay.
Isn’t she gorgeous?

Tiny life. And another egg about to hatch.

Okay, remember that book I told you about – the one my friend Amy recommended? In the book, the author says a great way to prime your kids for a conversation (later) about babies is by using examples of animal births. She says if someone’s cat was having kittens she would ask to come over, etc.

I read that and thought, Hmmm, good idea. But where are we gonna see that? The zoo? Then I got busy and didn’t think about that for a while.

When the nest appeared, my kids were SO into it. Molly made this sign for the playroom door to make sure no one accidentally scared the mama bird.

I got to thinking about the fact that I didn’t know where we were going to go to see the miracle of live animal birth, and all of THIS happened. I realized I didn’t have to go looking for it after all; it came to us…how cool is that?  I am all kinds of grateful.

Got any bird stories? Have you thought about, or do you look for this kind of thing to share with your kids?
