Today is Earth Day, but it also happens to be the day Erma Bombeck died. While I love mother Earth, on this day (and for the next few) I intend to pay homage to one of the funniest moms to walk the planet.
She would have been the ultimate blogger, no?
It’s pretty awesome that a regular ole mom would be remembered for her humor about motherhood for so many years after her passing (1996).
Don’t you want to be remembered when you are gone? I do. I’m not sure for what, exactly…perhaps my inability to walk through a doorway without catching the fat of my upper arm on the door jamb? Or my inability to walk in a straight line in general, even without doorways? If we were walking together at the mall, I would probably slowly inch you over to the side – especially if I were near the magnetic pull of of Godiva or one of those pretzel places.
Back to to Erma. I was not a mom when she was writing about motherhood, so I am in the process of getting to know her. If that’s true for you, too, then we can do that together. If you are already familiar with her, then remember and laugh again.
Erma Bombeck (February 21, 1927 – April 22, 1996) wrote humorous newspaper columns for years and also authored several books on the topic of suburban life.

I adore Erma Bombeck. I have read all her books multiple times. Although some of it is a bit dated, and young mothers of today may not even have reference to it from a kid perspective (I’m in the age range of a Bombeck offspring), her sheer storytelling prowess is razor sharp. My absolute favorite is the series where they move to the suburbs. In honor of Earth Day, reading the section where they receive the landscaping that comes with their house would be appropriate.
