If you have a Garmin (or navigation system in your vehicle) programmed with your home location and someone steals a combination of your keys, car, garage door opener and Garmin…well they can just head on over to your place! I am ALWAYS lost, but when I do know where I am, I mostly use my Garmin to know what time I will get where I am going. Paranoid individual that I am, I have always had ours set to the neighbor’s house. (Um, sorry neighbor!)
But then I saw this post on One Sweet World that was highlighted by The DC Ladies and decided to make the “Home” address a little further. A savvy crook would probably try the garage door opener on the surrounding houses if it didn’t work. So, now my home location is a nearby intersection, as Lindsey from One Sweet World suggests. (Great point, Lindsey!)
How to Change Your Home Location on Garmin
You’d think changing your home location on the Garmin would be intuitive, but I didn’t think it was. You have to delete your existing home location first. Here are some step by step instructions.
1. Select Where To?
2. Select Favorites.
3. Don’t push the green “Go Home” option at the top , but rather arrow down and scroll through until you see Home in the list of favorites so you can select it that way.
4. Once you select Home from the list, an edit option will appear on the bottom right of the screen.
5. As I mentioned, in order to change your home location on a Garmin, you have to delete your existing location first.
If you want to choose an intersection as your home address, you need to actually be in that spot so the Garmin can set that location as “Home.”
Hope this was helpful. Be safe, Friends!
Very clever!!! You’re thinking like MY mom now!
Well, since I have already decided I love your mom, I think that’s a good thing.
I would suggest setting “home” to the nearest police station. It would really throw the crook off.
Okay, that’s an awesome idea!
Except that’s where I work. I’d rather someone come to my home where I’m armed (I’m not an officer) than at my work!
We still have “home” set as where we lived in PA 3.5 years ago. I’ve never changed it b/c I realized it would be a bad idea to be able to lead people to our house!
This was very informative. Thanks so much! In today’s society, using a nearby intersection as home seems much safer. Once again, thanks.
