How to Fix Dry Or Chemically- Damaged Hair

So, I have been dying my hair for YEARS. I went gray pretty early (thanks, Mom). I have my hair dyed at a salon every few weeks. To keep costs down, I leave with wet hair and go home and fix it myself.

The last time I had it dyed and went home to fix it, something was off. WAY off. My hair was dry and brittle. I was really confused because I hadn’t changed anything.

So, we talked about it. I learned about all kinds of oils (mostly coconut) and pantry recipes that help.

Knowledge from the Park Bench

So, we were at the park with a bunch of friends and I mentioned the problem and my friend, Anrita. She said she knew someone who had a similar problem and it was from hormones.

DING! DING! DING! Ah-HAH! Yes, I recently changed birth control and that totally could be causing this problem!

Learning at Preschool

The next day, I picked my son up at preschool and ran into one of the other moms (Missy) who is a hairdresser. I asked her for advice and she told me about this shampoo and conditioner with lots of vitamins.

I started washing my hair every other day with these products.

Missy also suggested when I get my hair dyed to ask them to do the roots only and not let chemicals sit on the rest of my hair.

Letting my hair air dry occasionally has helped, too. I usually blow-dry it and then run a big fat curling iron through it to smooth it out.

Never used a product like this before, but I found a heat protectant by Joico called silk result. It’s 12 bucks on Amazon, but I got mine at TJ Maxx for $7.99. (TJ Maxx is a deal mecca for hair products – who knew?!)

My hair is still dry, but a LOT better than it was.

Another problem in the mix for me is my styling product. I have been using Redken Guts forever and apparently it has a lot of alcohol in it and that doesn’t help if your hair is dry and damaged. Still hunting for a good styling product.

What hair styling products do you use?

Thanks, Monique. Funny you say that – my hairdresser friend, Missy, the one who recommended the shampoo ALSO highly recommended argan oil. She gave me the shampoo and I kinda forgot about the oil – I never ordered it. Thanks for mentioning that!

      Have a great day –
      Heather

Thx for posting! As you know, my hair is chemically processed. I’ve been struggling for awhile with dryness and brittle hair. My new colorist introduced me to the Kerastase (sp?) line by L’oreal. It’s amazing. She gave me about 2 months worth of free packets and it’s like I have new hair. It’s SUPER $$$ though (like $30 for each shampoo & conditioner!) so….I’m trying to find the next best thing. Maybe I’ll check out your recommendation! Thx

You know, I was at CVS recently printing pictures on one of those little photo machines they have in there. Anyway, the clerk who was helping me was telling me she is in school to become a hair stylist. So, of course, I asked her what she thought and THAT’s exactly what she recommended. I kinda forgot about that until you mentioned it. So thanks, and good to know someone who tried it and liked it. Did you order it online or find it in a store?

I use Suave’s Keratin Infusion. I love the way my hair feels, and I don’t have to take out a loan to buy it.

De Lorenzo has a fantastic range of natural and organic hair care products, notably their Rejuven8 and Prescriptive Solutions range. If you can check my blog, I’ve written a post detailing about the importance of choosing natural & organic products, as well as the difference between them. I’d love to hear your thoughts :)
