1. Go to the library. A no-brainer, right? But since we live in the Bermuda triangle, what should be a free book option is not so free for us. It costs a lot to replace a lost book. Some people (me) aren’t responsible enough to check books out of the library. In summary, I can’t manage a stack of books, but yet I have two children in my care. Hmmmm…problematic.
2. Used bookstore. All about it. Love to go in there because you can get so much for your money. I buy a lot of early reader books for my six-year-old. And I buy a lot of movies from the bargain bin, but that’s another post.
3. Half.com. This is a new one for me. My friend (and loyal TheMommyhood.com reader) Jennifer told me about this site where you can get new and used books with a pretty accurate description of the condition for a really low price. Haven’t used this yet, but it looks tempting. It is an eBay company, and I have had some issues with them, but its hard for me to imagine a scenario where low-dollar books would create a problem. I might try it at some point. Also, through this site you can purchase movies, games and music.
4. New and Used books from Amazon.com. For those of you who are getting to know Erma Bombeck with me. I bought everyone who left a comment on that post an Erma Bombeck book through Amazon. When you look up your book on Amazon there are usually two small links under your selection – one for new and one for used copies of that book from other sellers. I went to the new copies and got books for a couple of dollars each. Shipping for each book was 3.99, but I didn’t mind because the grand total was only around $7 per reader. And I got a used copy for myself for only a penny +3.99 for shipping. $4 total – a bargain!
And, now I must admit because it’s both funny and true that I went looking for a dollar for this picture in my six-year-old’s wallet. I’m sure Erma would understand and appreciate it.
Alright, how do you guys save money on books?
I have the hardest time trying to decide what to read, so I peruse Goodwill to see if anything catches my eye. Can’t beat 75 cents for a paperback!
That’s a GREAT idea. I usually go there looking for home decor projects. Next time I go, I will definitely check out the books.
I love to read!! I mostly buy books from a used book store in town, but I’ve also borrowed quite a few from friends lately. When I asked a friend to borrow a book he had just read, he said, “Oh, it’s on my Kindle; would you like to borrow that?” Woo hoo! If you have some kind of electronic reader, there are lots of free books out there.
