Should You Pay for Custom Ear Plugs?

When your child has recently had ear tube surgery, there is a direct route for bacteria to enter their ear. So they will need to use earplugs when they take a bath, shower, or go to the pool.

Should you pay for expensive custom earplugs?

Yes, according to my sister, whose son has had three sets of ear tubes. If you swim a lot, you’ll want to get the custom ones.

Why not just get the cheaper ones?

The custom ones are more effective because they stay in place. The cheaper ones don’t keep water out very well. Plus, you need to use a headband on top of the inexpensive ones to hold them in, which is annoying to your child and makes things harder for mom or dad when it comes to hair-washing.

How much do earplugs cost?

The cheaper “Doc Plugs” are about $10 but you’ll also need an ear/head band to hold them in, which probably costs another $10.

If your child isn’t very active or won’t mind the headband, maybe you can get away with the less expensive ones, but we tried all the cheap stuff and strongly recommend you pay the fee (about $80) and get custom earplugs because they are so much better. Additionally, your child gets to pick out the colors.
