How My Four Year Old Learned to Read

I’m not one of those people who is hung up on when my kid does XYZ. But I have to tell you that my son, Charlie (who just turned four) can sound out words and read a little bit.

I wish I could say, “Oh yes, I taught my young progeny to read!” But that would be a big fat lie. I mean, we read to him, but no more than we did to my daughter (6) who learned to read in Kindergarten. (By the way, Kindergarten sure isn’t milk and cookies anymore! But I digress…)

He likes the computer and I let him play on this free educational website called starfall.com that my daughter used when she was in kindergarten.  Charlie has been doing that occasionally for about a year. The games teach the letter sounds. And about two weeks ago he looked at a word and sounded it out. Shocked, I grabbed one of my daughter’s early reader books and he could totally read it! Maybe this is just a fluke, but if you have a three-year-old who will sit still long enough to play an interactive game on the computer, I highly recommend it.

If you know anyone with young kids, please pass this along. It has really been a good thing for us and maybe it will be for someone else.
