Allergy Spray: Snorting a Mood Swing

sj I recently went to the allergy doctor which was interesting and entertaining. It’s good to know what you are allergic to.

Anyway, the doctor prescribed an allergy nasal spray to use twice a day. He gave me a sample and prescription for a year’s worth of something called Dymista.

I used the sample for about four days and was biting people’s heads off.  Everything made me angry; I just didn’t feel right. I called my Dad, who is a pharmacist, to see if the spray might be the problem. He said he wasn’t familiar with that particular spray, but said that antihistamine nose sprays are generally low-dose, and it shouldn’t bother me.

Hmmmm, I was perplexed. I had just finished my period (I know, TMI) but I tell you that so you know that wasn’t the problem.

Something was definitely up.

Had lunch with my friend Rachel, and her husband stopped by. While he was there I happened to mention my mood swings and the spray. He said that it probably has corticosteroid in it. He was right. And he said that’s what was causing my mood swings.

My friend’s super smart husband suggested I get local honey and eat some each day. He also said to use saline spray a couple times per day when I am having problems. That made perfect sense to me, so I started doing that. So far, so good. I’m fortunate that my allergies are mild.

As for the crazy spray, it took a few days to get the medicine out of my body, but once I did, I felt normal again. So, I’m certain that was the problem.

Now, I don’t want to diss a perfectly good product. Dymista probably works great for other people – it just didn’t work for me.

Are your allergies acting up? Anyone tried the honey tip? Curious to know what kinds of things have helped you.

We have all used local honey for 3 years now. It helps so much. I can’t wait for farmers market o open to get a new jar.

That’s good to hear! Local farmer’s market is a great idea for where to get it. I got some at Earth Fare. It’s Tennessee honey – not super local, but in the state is pretty good. Will check out the farmer’s market!

Hi I just wanted to say thank you for posting your experience with Dymista. You are not alone. I started taking it about 2 weeks ago and have noticed the same exact symptoms you did. I have been exceedingly angry and just haven’t been myself lately. I’m going to stop taking it right away and hopefully I’ll get back to my self soon. Yikes, I thought I was going crazy. Thanks again.

The doctor that recommended it acted like it was the best thing since sliced bread. He must have meant stale, moldy sliced bread, because it was awful. Sorry you had the same experience and I am glad to know I am not alone, too!

Thank you for your post. How odd this is not mentioned as a side effect. Me too totally. having short fuses over the smallest thing. Felt stress for no reason. I lasted 3 days on dymista. It’s been 3 days since I stop and feel like my old self again :)
