Following are instructions on how to make an easy and inexpensive tutu for the little ballerina in your life. It’s actually a great activity to do with friends, so consider hosting a tutu party.

What you will need:

[pinit]

  • 4-6 yards of tulle (Wal-Mart $1 per yard, JoAnn’s $1.50/$2.00 per yard depending on the sheen. I like to use 2 or 3 different colors. In my opinion, choosing at least one intense color makes a more striking tutu.)
  • You can use 1/2″, 3/4″ or 1″ elastic.  Be sure to get the elastic that says “non roll” on it.
  • 1 yard of two-sided ribbon that coordinates with your tulle (roughly 1″ or so width)
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Needle
  • Thread – color similar to your ribbon
  • arthritis medicine (just kidding)

1. Cut the elastic to fit around the waist with a half-inch overlap. (If you have a 20″ waist – cut the elastic at 20-1/2″). If you have a sewing machine, use that to turn the strip of elastic into a 20″ circle that will serve as the waist-band for the tutu. If not, use the needle and thread.

2. Determine the length of the tutu. Let’s say you want the finished length of your tutu to be 10″ long.

3. Cut the tulle into strips that are 3″ wide and 20″ long (twice the length of your finished length of 10″). Cutting tulle will make your curse unless you roll it up and cut a whole wad of it at once . So, here’s what I did. I cut  the tulle at 20″ and then rolled that up into a long tube and used my ruler to cut that into 3″ wide strips (see pictures below).

4. Place the elastic around the back of a child’s chair – or something similar while you attach the tulle. To add the tulle, take one of those 3″ x 20″ strips and fold it in half. Take the center point and make a loop around the elastic and then pull the ends of the tulle through the hold you just made. Alternate colors until all of the elastic is covered.

5. Use the ribbon to tie a basic bow. Attach it to the waist-band of the tutu with the needle and thread.

And voila! A too cute tutu made by you you.
