Tips for Easy Gardening with Your Kids

So, it’s gorgeous outside in Tennessee. It’s the time of year when I start to think about outdoor projects. And since one of my kids’ favorite passtimes is digging for worms in the mulch I thought why not get a little garden going. But then I remembered that I am lazy strategic. So I needed to find a low-cost and low-commimtent way to go about it.

A landscape designer at a local nursery Saplings Garden Center suggested flowers over veggies and pots over a plot for beginners. Excellent, I thought. He also suggested letting the kids decorate the pots first. Excellent AGAIN, I thought. The kids had a ball painting thier pots and planting sunflower seeds. Now they are having fun checking the progress of the plants each day.

Quick and Easy Flowers From Seeds

If you want instant gratification, plant existing flowers in pots or the yard. If you want to grow from seeds (and are impatient like me) you’ll want to start with flowering seeds like daisies, marigolds or sunflower seeds.

Quick and Easy Veggies From Seeds

If you want to grow veggies from seeds and would like to see quick results, then you should choose cucumbers, carrots or tomoatoes.

    We are starting all our flowers and veggies from seed this year. My daughter and husband planted them in special trays from Walmart and they all sprouted within a week. My daughter was so excited. Have your kids seen The Lorax yet? If not, it’s a great movie to tie in with planting seeds. I’m hoping she’ll be more willing to eat the veggies since she planted and cared for the seeds herself.

      I am the only one who wants to see it. I may just make them go. Tell me more about these special trays. Do the plants come in the trays or do you plant them. I’m intrigued!

    I’ve really been wanting to start a garden this year so my son can learn about the process. But I REALLY don’t want the extra work. This seems like the perfect solution! And the tip about having them decorate the pot is brilliant!
