Time For A Reward

I dropped the kids off at camp. My sneakers hit the pavement in the parking lot when I heard it…Aretha Franklin’s Freedom.

It was the last day of freedom summer camp for my kids, so I approached my day with an attitude of carpe diem. The fridge was empty and the laundry was knee-deep, but there was no way I was going spend my last free summer day fighting the eternal work at the homestead.

So off I went, enjoying the peace and quiet. Ahhh, silence. No kids, no noisy toys, no Dora videos.  Just me and the open road. Destination…the antique shops in Sweetwater, Tennessee (about 30 minutes away).

As I drove, I thought about something that happened this week.  I got a paycheck. A small one, but it’s the first money I have earned in two years. And, more importantly, it’s the first money I have ever earned as a writer. Now, a practical unemployed person would have put that money in the bank or reinvested it in my doesn’t-quite-exist-yet business. But where’s the fun in that?

So I went to one of my favorite spots called Bobby Todd Antiques and got a clock I had been wanting for a couple of months. I didn’t even expect it to be there, but there it was, waiting for me.

And it’s interesting that I wrote an article on this store, got paid for it and then spent that money in that store.  It also is interesting that I chose a clock to remember the time I wrote my first newspaper article.

Not a bad idea to reward ourselves now and again. How do you reward yourself?
