Washing Dishes By Hand
One of my earliest memories of washing dishes by hand is at my childhood BFF Missy’s house. We were probably 4 or 5 years old. We had two chairs at the sink and were washing dishes together. We sang while we worked, and the song was from Pop-Eye: “I want a clean, shaven man…”
Here we are at that age.
Missy and I remained in touch until we were teenagers, but then lost each other for about 20 years. We were eventually reunited, ironically on a trip to GE in Louisville, KY about two years ago.
Okay, back to dishes. Doing dishes by hand is only fun when you are five.
No Dishwasher
After college, I lived in a house with some other girls in Washington, DC. We did not have a dishwasher, and it was the first time I really realized how nice it is to have one.
Since then, I have been fortunate enough to always have a dishwasher. And over time, I have come to appreciate dishwashers with great features like the one I got recently.
Features to look for in the GE Hybrid Stainless Dishwasher:
Hidden Controls: I love the clean look.
Wash Zones: I can wash just the upper or lower rack of dishes only. Do you ever find the upper level is full, but not the lower? We go through a lot of cups over here. And silverware.
TWO Silverware Holders in the Front: I love that this dishwasher has PLENTY of room for my silverware. There are lids on the silverware caddies that enable you to space out your silverware. I love that for my knives, but I also like some just open storage, so I kept some and removed some of those silverware-holder things.
Seriously Clean Dishes: I just scrape off the big stuff, but I don’t have to rinse them very much. This dishwasher does the dirty work for me.
Silence is Golden: Okay, it’s not totally silent, but its really quiet. In fact, if there wasn’t a light on the front, I might not even know it’s on.
Stainless: The interior dishwasher door is stainless. The rest of the dishwasher has a plastic interior.
Wine Glass Rack: This dishwasher has a stabilizer that attaches to the side of the upper rack that will hold wine glasses upside down by the stem.
One of my beefs with my old dishwasher is that my glasses had to lay down in the upper rack and that always caused them to have a ring on one side.
Designed for Cascade: This puppy is designed for Cascade – the little pods you get, rather than the liquid, and the rinse aid. With my old dishwasher, I always used the liquid detergent, but GE requested we use the pods and provided them. I am used to them now and like them. Rinse aid really helps, if you aren’t using it, I recommend it, too.
It’s also very energy efficient. More about that in my next post.
My GE dishwasher is model GDT550HGDBB. Overall, I really like it.
What features are you looking for in a dishwasher?
Many thanks to our friends at GE for providing this dishwasher. To learn more about GE Appliances, please visit GEAppliances.com and follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
Xoxo Luv the memories! The dishwasher looks awesome. When ours dies, I’ll have to check it out! There’s some things I’m not fond of in ours. At least I don’t have to do them by hand!
AND – you have a clean shaven man!
I’ve never seen that picture of you guys. Very Cool- Great post too, H!
Thanks, Amy.
Although we got a sightly different model ours also gets the dishes AMAZINGLY clean and we just love it! If it weren’t for the people at our appliance store we would have not found out about GE dishwashers
Well, at this point, I am a pretty big fan of the GE dishwasher. Glad you got one and like it, too!
After the way this one cleans it will be hard to look at anything else!
