Lots of Love at the Special Olympics

Had a ball as a volunteer photographer at the Special Olympics the other day.

I’m connected with this event through a childhood pal and her folks. My friends, the Pinckards, have a dear friend whose daughter competes at the Games.

Here I am with my childhood friend, Allie, whose parents thought I would grow up to be a spy. In fact, Mr. Pinckard stills call me “007.”

Likewise, I have longstanding names for them, too. Even though I am an adult now, I can’t help but refer to them as Mr. Pinckard or Mrs. Pinckard. And I even found myself dropping sirs and m’ams like I did when I was younger. Do you guys do that with your friends’ parents, too?

Anyway, back to taking pictures at the Olympics. There were lots of great photographers there. In fact, I found myself with lens-envy once again this year.

An event like this is actually a really great place to practice your photography skills, but I was all warm and fuzzy inside and not feeling terribly studious. And since I knew all the heavy hitters would get the action shots, I instead looked for moments of human interaction. And I found them.

Look at this picture.

Love.

And this one…

It’s a little blurry, but you get the vibe. Love.

More love.

And this handsome guy….

…has just about all the love he can handle!

Love.
Lots of love at the Special Olympics.

I loved being there and applaud all the brave participants, their coaches and parents. As for the people who put the event together – salt of the earth. It was a privilege to be near them.
