Mother’s Day Gifts Conversion Guide

Yesterday (Mother’s Day) started with my kids coming into my bedroom like this.

They even called me Madam.

As I ate breakfast, I was brought drawings and was reluctantly given a made-at-school Mother’s Day project from my son, Charlie.

It pained him to give me the colored cupcake drawing with the list of “coupons” attached. He admitted as he handed it over that he’d seriously considered ripping off the coupons before giving it to me. “You can only use them ONCE!” he clarified as we got to the coupon that said: Clean Your Room.

I loved my hugs and artwork and breakfast in bed.

But as you know, Motherhood is not all sunshine and lollipops. Remember this gem?

A Great Story from Great Clips

On Saturday, we went out to run errands. I took Charlie into Great Clips for a haircut and Bert took Molly to Publix (walking distance) to get a card for his mom.

The best part of a haircut – if you are seven – is the lollipop you get at the end. They know us there, and Charlie usually takes one for Molly, too.

But as I was checking out, he was acting strangely. Suspicious, I asked how many suckers he had. Two fingers were held up in a V. Two fingers and a look that said, Are you buying this?

“Show me,” I said.

He turned away from me to fish two Dum Dums® out of his pocket. He looked up at me with big eyes and eyelashes that seemed extra long all of a sudden.

I reached forward and patted his leg over the pocket in his shorts. Sure enough, there was another sucker in there.

Busted!

I made him put the third one back, and we left. I probably should have made him put them ALL back because he lied, but I was feeling generous.

We started towards Publix on foot to meet up with the rest of our family. Charlie was feeling totally robbed and spat, “I don’t LIKE you!” He paused as we were crossing the street and added, “JAYWALKER!!”

 Ahhh, good stuff.

He more than made up for it with sweetness Sunday morning. Later that day, when I saw a friend at church I noticed we were both sporting homemade jewelry.

And my friend, Jeni, was given this drawing from her five-year-old.

All this reminded me of a fantastic drawing by my friend, Heather Hopp-Bruce of The Baby Sucks.
